Contrary to popular belief, manual transmission clutches do not have a specific lifespan that is always going to be correct.
There are some that will last around 30,000 miles but others can easily go over 100,000 miles. This is because a big part of the lifespan is related to the driver.
Riding clutches and bleeding can easily wear down the system. You can notice signs that a clutch goes bad but if you do not know that this is what they are, you would neglect them. Make sure that you do not neglect the signs highlighted below as they show you it is time to change your transmission clutch.
Odd Engine Revving
When the clutch slips, there is a sound that appears. Basically, the engine of your vehicle does not rev yet and you cannot move forward. Alternatively, you just move forward at a slow rate. This happens because the clutch cannot create the proper friction necessary to turn the flywheel.
As a result, the motor revs. You have your foot pressed on the gas. However, the vehicle ends up remaining still. The clutch did not engage your transmission as it should have.
It is also possible to hear a sound similar to revving as the vehicle is placed in a neutral state. The input shaft might be worn out when you; hear that the engine is noisy before putting the vehicle into gear. Then, the engine sounds normal as it is put into the right gear.
This is a noise that will be quieter after the clutch pedal is depressed. Basically, the engine sounds like it is revving when it is still in a neutral phase. All of this means there is a problem with the clutch and there is most likely a need to replace it.
Grinding
Whenever you change a vehicle, it is completely normal to grind the gears. This happens as you get used to the new transmission and the process does include getting used to the clutch. After you get used to the vehicle and how the clutch operates, it is a lot simpler to shift gears.
You end up doing it much more smoothly, without hearing noises. But, after a while, you might start hearing grinding sounds between gears. This is possible even if you know exactly how to shift your gears, you get used to the pressure plate, and the release mechanism. As grinding appears, a part of the clutch most likely needs to be replaced.
The Gears Do Not Catch
When you find yourself in a situation in which it is impossible for you to put the automobile into the right gear or the gears catch when switching, there is a very good possibility you have to remove the clutch. Also, if you are lucky, you just have to adjust the clutch.
This is because loose clutches do prevent the vehicle from properly going into gear. Whenever you see that the clutch pedal is squeaking as it is depressed, lubrication is most likely necessary. Take the car to be checked out and see if the clutch works well or not.
Go To A Mechanic
Whenever you notice any of the signs mentioned above, it is very important to go to a mechanic as soon as you can. This is because the clutch most likely needs to be replaced. At the very least, it has to be serviced and repaired.
Fortunately, replacing your clutch is not at all difficult. Every single mechanic can do it. But, you do want to look for one that is experienced and that really knows what they are doing. Use the internet to read reviews and only go to a mechanic you can actually trust.
