Some viewers found Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny offensive. The fifth Indiana Jones film generated controversy for its allegedly woke humor. The eagerly anticipated fifth Indiana Jones film, which will release in 2023, follows Harrison Ford’s intrepid archaeologist as he looks for a fabled relic that has the power to change the course of time.

The Indiana Jones series, spanning five decades, is among Disney’s most beloved intellectual properties. However, not everyone shared the same sentiments about Dial of Destiny, a legacy sequel. Generally speaking, accusations of being a “woke” Indiana Jones movie bedevil most contemporary Disney productions.

Despite generally receiving positive reviews from critics, Disney’s bold move to take a risk appears to have backfired, as the film Dial of Destiny cost the studio $100 million. Although numerous factors contributed to the film’s financial failure, it is unlikely that any anti-woke controversy it may have sparked was the reason for its financial loss. Viewers have often criticized tent-pole films such as Dial of Destiny, and the fifth Indiana Jones film was no exception.

Indiana Jones Movie Woke Controversy: Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Character

A few jokes made by Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character that some people found “woke” were the main source of the purported controversy surrounding the fifth “woke” Indiana Jones movie. One of the film’s most memorable sequences features Waller-Bridge’s Helena battling Dr. Jones and the villainous Dr. Voller (Mads Mikkelsen) for possession of the film’s title artifact.

Voller accuses Jones of stealing, and Helena responds by accusing Jones of stealing as well. She quips to the two irate doctors, “It’s called capitalism,” in jest. However, it was not lost on those in the outraged camp that a large corporation such as Disney could write such a joke. Overall, Helena is a funny character, and some of the best parts of the film come from her generational conflicts with Indy.

Ultimately, though, the film’s critics disregarded the fact that Helena was merely a supporting character in a much larger universe and accepted the joke as the movie’s central thesis. The remaining Indiana Jones films were full of clever humor, and Helena’s joke about capitalism really captured the shifting views of the world of Dial of Destiny.

Helena makes another jab at her older co-star later in the film when she notes that Indiana Jones turned a profit from stealing artifacts from native American tribes. Another point of contention for the fifth “woke” Indiana Jones movie was the joke, which many deemed to be too “woke” for general audiences. Though the franchise is generally enjoyable, Dial of Destiny failed to consider the character’s legacy as it would have in the far more progressive 1960s.

Even with all of its colorful and exuberant action scenes, the Indiana Jones series has some more troubling aspects. Even in the 1980s, Temple of Doom faced criticism for overt racism. Indiana Jones’s actual theft made him unpopular in contemporary academia.

The archaeologist even plunders a temple in the franchise’s opening scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark. The justification that it keeps it out of Nazi hands is a little weak. The so-called “woke” controversy surrounding Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was ultimately exaggerated. But it was evident that it sparked strong feelings among the fandom.

Indiana Jones and Capitalism

Let us begin by analyzing these two scenes from the “woke” Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. First, they bring up capitalism. It is crucial to understand that a character in a movie doesn’t always represent the ideology of the movie. Movies typically feature multiple characters, each of whom ideally has a unique perspective that fosters a dialectic.

The new movie actually shows that Helena Shaw is a bundle of defects rather than some ideal, flawless person; she is obnoxious, conceited, and ultimately in need of assistance. In a lot of ways, the film denigrates her. She, therefore, represents a generation that is more self-righteous and self-centered than an ideal, progressive agenda.

But in any case, her statements aren’t entirely incorrect. Even if she were the movie’s shining example of morality and ideological power. Even so, it is provocative to compare capitalism to theft, the situation is more nuanced than that. We give our thanks to u/correcticallytech on Reddit, who responds to this brief scene in the movie below in an amazing way.

Shaw then responds in a succinct manner, claiming that Jones appropriated ideas from Indigenous cultures. What do you think? Yes, he did. Surprisingly, the fields of archaeology, anthropology, and art history have realized that robbing and pillaging treasure from other cultures is not cool.

Indiana Jones and The New World

Jones never wavered in his belief that artifacts belonged in Western museums. That is where they could be studied by Western scholars and enjoyed by Western audiences. The majority of wise individuals are realizing that our museums are literally filled to the brim with pilfered goods.

Even with all of its colorful and exuberant action scenes, the “woke” Indiana Jones movie series has some more troubling aspects. Even in the 1980s, Temple of Doom faced criticism for overt racism. Indiana Jones’s actual theft would make him unpopular in contemporary academia.

The archaeologist plunders a temple in the franchise’s opening scene from Raiders of Lost Ark. The justification that it keeps it out of Nazi hands sounds quite a little weak. The so-called “woke” controversy surrounding Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was ultimately an exaggeration. But it was evident that it sparked strong feelings among the fandom.

What Is Woke?

A whole faction of people were eager to criticize Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. This was long before the movie had even released its first trailer. Why is this happening? The plain fact is that, in our bizarre world, things that are “masculine” by society, like Bud Light and Indiana Jones, define progressiveness. M&Ms and Target are also in. And now Disney.

Disney took the risk of allowing the kiss of a Black mermaid in The Little Mermaid and Lightyear. Eerie, huh? Without a doubt, a cartoon kiss and a Blackfish woman will not revolutionize culture as we know it. Heaven forbid that a female character in an Indiana Jones movie responds to the eighty-year-old Harrison Ford. It is genuinely apocalyptic.

Wrapping Up

Sadly, talking about anything even slightly contentious these days only serves to exacerbate animosity, exaggerate, and divide people more. A movie character says something seemingly innocent (like “That’s capitalism”), and the reaction to this apparent wokeness is vicious anti-wokeness. This anti-wokeness then breeds more anti-anti-wokeness, and so on, with no end in sight.
