For many people, there is no single cure for back pain.  It takes a series of trials and tribulations of trying to find the best way to find what works best for them.  The first step towards finding a practical solution, however, is to identify what is causing your pain.

Without knowing the culprit, you won’t be able to eliminate it.  When considering what may be causing your back pain, take a look at these common causes.

Poor Posture:

Sitting or standing in a slouched position for long periods of time is a common cause for severe back pain.  Your spine’s natural tendency is to stand tall and elongated.  However, when it’s scrunched, you’ll begin to feel pain over time.

One of the best ways to improve your posture, particularly if a lot of your day is spent sitting down is to buy an ergonomic chair. These chairs will train your back to sit in a proper position and follow the natural curve of your spine.

Over time you’ll start to adopt this posture naturally, even when you’re not sitting in the chair.

An Injury:

If you’ve ever suffered an injury which damaged your spine or tailbone, it may come back to haunt you later. It’s vital that you take the proper action immediately following an injury to ensure that it doesn’t flare up on you throughout your life resulting in chronic back pain.

If you ever suffer an injury to your back, be sure to lay down and stay off of it as much as possible.  If you force yourself to be too active too soon after you hurt yourself, you could cause yourself a lifetime of pain. 

Excess Weight:

If you have extra weight that you’re carrying around, it may be negatively affecting your core.  When your back isn’t able to support all of the weight it’s carrying around it will start to cause pain.

If your back pain seems to be getting worse and worse, and you notice the scale increasing, you may want to consider that it’s time to start taking action towards losing weight.  When your diet is leading to physical discomfort, it’s a big sign that it’s time to make changes for your health not just for vanity.

Poor Quality Mattress:

Many people sleep on mattresses which aren’t providing the proper support for their spines.  Little do they realize that a bad mattress won’t just increase a bad back, but it will affect your quality of sleep which can affect every area of your life from your mood to your productivity.

One of the first things that you should do when you’re suffering back pain is to consider buying a new mattress.
