The Use of DAG Technology:
DAG, or Database Availability Group, helps to protect your Exchange Online Mailbox information. DAG can be made up of as many as 16 Exchange mailbox servers, and it will help in recovering data if there is a network or server failure that was caused by Microsoft.
The Exchange administrators can select a DAG in various geographical locations, along with various architectural configurations to help mitigate risks. However, if the data malfunctions occur internally, then the DAGs are only going to have a limited reach.
Use Data Restoration Methods that are “Off the Shelf”
This is considered to be the standard backup method for those who use SharePoint. With this feature, you can restore your older files from the SharePoint. While this is true, the restore is going to overwrite any data that is presently on the site collection.
Litigation Hold
This particular backup feature helps to preserve the content in your mailbox. The protection provided extends to the original version of any modified item, as well as deleted items.
This particular feature offered by Office 365 backup is mainly used for protecting any data if there is any type of lawsuit being filed. An admin doesn’t have the ability to apply any litigation hold in bulk. Instead, they have to set this up for each user. This is a process that can be quite tedious.
Retention Policy:
While this is very similar to the litigation hold that was mentioned above, it is mainly used for protecting your email information from being deleted. An admin can apply this policy to an entire organization, a single mailbox, or even a group of various users.
It’s important to understand, though, that there are some system limitations when it comes to using retention policies. Due to these limitations, you have to consider the particular record types that need to have the policy applied to it.
Lagged Copies:
Another option is to use Standby Continuous Replication, or SCR, which holds extra copies of the Mailbox Database. This is another effective disaster recovery solution for your data.
Even though the log files have been copied right away, they are only able to be accessed after a particular time. In some cases, this may result in a halt to various business processes.
Consider a Third-Party Backup Solution for Office 365
Even though the Office 365 program itself offers the ability to restore lost data if a mistake occurs due to their own infrastructure (i.e. a server goes down) there isn’t much backup offered for other possible problems. As a result, it’s a good idea to implement other backup solutions when using this program.
