By Rishab DeySlated to air next Tuesday, that is, October 10th, the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards will be honoring a hoard of legends, including the likes of Verzuz co-founders Swizz Beats and Timbaland, Marley Marl and Kiernan “AKA” Forbes.
Super producers Swizz and Timbo will be given the Rock The Bells Cultural Influence Award by the founder and CEO of Rock The Bells, LL Cool J.
The award is meant to appreciate and honor the pair’s immense contribution and limitless creativity.
LL will be on double duty as he and Rakim will be teaming up to give a tribute performance to honor the year’s I Am Hip Hop Award recipient Marley Marl. Marl’s creativity and musical genius date back to his iconic production along with the Juice crew. He had a huge influence on some of the genre’s best producers, including names like Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA, DJ Premier, and Pete Rock.
Kiernan “AKA” Forbes, will be receiving the Global Visionary Award posthumously for his global impact on the hip-hop genre. Earlier this year, the 35-year-old South African rapper was killed by gunshot. His parents, Tony and Lynn Forbes, will be accepting the award on his behalf.
Fans can expect some performances from BaBaby, GloRilla, Offset, Fivio Foreign, Sexxy Red, and many more. Some other legendary names include Bow Wow, Jermaine Dupri, Dem Franchise Boyz, and Da Brat, who will be performing to celebrate Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def label’s 30th anniversary.
Cardi B and 21 Savage are leading the nominees with 12 nominations each. Drake follows closely with nine nominations. DJ Khaled and Burna Boy have seven nominations to their name, respectively. The 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards is set to be taped in Atlanta, and it will be aired on October 10 at 9 p.m.
