International Womens day

But how can you make the most of this special day? How can you show your appreciation and support for the women in your life and around the world? How can you have fun and feel empowered as a woman yourself?

Why Do We celebrate Women’s Day on 8th March?

The history of International Women’s Day can be traced back to the early 20th century, when women’s movements were emerging in different parts of the world.

On February 28, 1909, the US celebrated the inaugural National Woman’s Day, as a result of a proclamation made by the Socialist Party of America. Clara Zetkin suggested creating a yearly Women’s Day in 1910 at the Copenhagen International Conference of Working Women.

Over a million people celebrated the first International Women’s Day in 1911 throughout Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland as a result of the proposal’s unanimous ratification.

The importance of International Women’s Day resides in its ability to spur reform and advancement in the areas of women’s rights and gender equality.

It serves as a platform to highlight the achievements and challenges of women around the world, and to demand justice and dignity for all women.

It also provides an opportunity to celebrate the diversity and solidarity of women, and to inspire and empower future generations of women.

International Women’s Day is celebrated in different ways across the globe, depending on the local context and culture.

Some common ways to celebrate include organizing or attending events, such as marches, rallies, workshops, panels, or concerts, that showcase and support women’s causes and issues.

Other ways to celebrate include expressing gratitude and appreciation for the women in one’s life, such as family, friends, colleagues, or mentors, by sending messages, cards, gifts, or flowers.

Another way to celebrate is to educate oneself and others about the history, achievements, and challenges of women, and to advocate for their rights and interests.

International Women’s Day 2024 Theme

International Women’s Day 2024 Theme

Every year, there is a specific theme for Women’s Day. For example, last year in 2023, the theme for International Women’s Day was ‘Embrace Equity.’ These themes aim to focus and emphasize on some or the other problem areas.

As per the International Women’s Day website, the campaign theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is ‘Inspire Inclusion‘. This theme emphasizes the importance of diversity and empowerment in all aspects of society.

According to IWD, “Inspire Inclusion encourages everyone to recognize the unique perspectives and contributions of women from all walks of life, including those from marginalized communities.”

It calls for action to remove barriers, debunk myths, and create environments where each and every woman is valued and acknowledged.

The goal of Inspire Inclusion is to raise awareness of the distinctive viewpoints and valuable contributions that women— including those from underrepresented communities— bring to society.

The United Nations has also announced its own theme for International Women’s Day 2024, which is ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress‘. This theme focuses on the economic disempowerment of women and the need to invest in their education, health, skills, and leadership. It also highlights the benefits of gender equality for sustainable development and human rights.

Both themes aim to celebrate the achievements and potential of women, while also raising awareness and taking action for the challenges and inequalities they face.
