Barbie is the doll’s name that was first launched by the Toy company Mattel, Inc. by the company owner Ruth Handler and her husband Elliot in 1959. The doll has adult features and has become so popular that young girls worldwide were inspired by fashion.

The first Barbie was launched in the American toy market, where the doll is an 11-inch plastic figure with long legs, a sassy smile, pouty red lips, blonde ponytail wearing a black-and-white striped bathing suit. Oh, how we wished we were Barbie when we were little!

Greta Gerwig has directed the film “Barbie,” which was also co-written by partner and filmmaker Noah Baumbach. Apart from playing the lead character of Barbie, Margot Robbie has also co-produced the film along with David Heyman, Robbie Brenner, and Tom Ackerley.

The trends related to Barbie have been in the spotlight from the day the dolls were launched thus creating Barbie core. It has integrated into different elements of entertainment over the years. For the past few years, Barbie has successfully remained relevant, further spurred by the all-pink Valentino fashion show in 2022.

The fashion show highlighted the hot pink Pantone shade. Another fashion show that particularly focused on Barbie and iconography was the Spring/ Summer 2015 collection by Jeremy Scott. The models sported blonde wigs, pink sportswear, and ruffled evening dresses.

What Is Barbiecore

Barbiecore is a trend that is partial to vibrant shades of pink. It all started when the first images from the Greta Gerwig film “Barbie” came out in June 2022. The internet went haywire with Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie in costume for the film.

A specific shade of pink defines a vibrant trend; however, from my point of view, it is more than that. The trend is catching celebrity fashion figures fast as they are photographed in different shades of pink outfits, such as Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Florence Pugh, and Nicole Richie.

For me, the trend of Barbiecore is about carrying yourself confidently and feeling good about yourself. The perception of Barbie fashion is about spreading happiness in the world. In 2023, we all need a dash of pink in our lives!

The film is not just a fashion inspiration but also an inspiration for people who will finally see the human version of Barbie and her existential life crisis. The shade pink is about handling life with vibrancy and fun!

During the pandemic, fashion dressing changed because people needed something exciting and fun to hold on to in the dark times! The trend could be identified as “dopamine dressing” as it sparks excitement, fun, and playfulness.

What can be more impactful than the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, popping in different shades of pink throughout this year for all her royal engagements? It felt like a royal stamp to the vibrant trend of Barbiecore with her fashion and clothing choices.

The first Barbie pink presence that the Princess granted us was in June 2022 in her pastel pink Alexander McQueen suit. It was for her engagement with the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood. Another appearance that Kate Middleton made in a ruched raspberry pink dress on the balcony of Buckingham Palace was by Stella McCartney in June 2022.

The ex-duchess of Cambridge matched the hot shade of pink in a magenta turtleneck sweater, black trousers, and a matching coat in January 2023. She also wore a coral coat dress in May 2022 for a Buckingham Palace garden party.

Margot Robbie, who stars as Barbie, has been readying up for the release of Barbie on July 21, 2023, by appearing in different shades of pink. She appeared in a shimmering Chanel dress which was in pastel pink, at the 2023 Golden Globes.

On the press tour for the film, Robbie wears outfits that Barbie of different eras and professions inspires. The Fashion Report in 2022 informed that the search for all things pink has skyrocketed to 416 % after the release of photos and trailers of Barbie.
