Small Children

Before you become a parent, the last thing on your mind is how your home suits the safety of a small child.  Unless you have relatives or friends coming over with small children, most people are totally oblivious to the changes that need to happen once you have a baby.

When your baby is first born, they aren’t mobile which makes keeping them safe pretty simple.  However, as they begin to grow and walk around, their curiosity can be dangerous.   As they get into places that they shouldn’t and find ways to knock things over, you start to notice just how much in your house could cause serious injury to them.

Here are some of the best ways to crack down on safety in your house and keep your small children out of harm’s way.

Use Cupboard and Drawer Locks:

Since your cupboards are often full of items which have harmful substances in them, it’s important to make sure that no curious hands get into them.  You may also have drawers full of things like knives or other objects which shouldn’t get into the grips of a small child.  Using a lock which small children can’t open but is very simple for adults to use is the best way to ensure they stay away from harm.

All it takes is one second to look away, and in a flash, kids can get into danger.

If you use insect killer or products which contain poison, you may want to remove them entirely from your home.  Consider putting them in a garage or outdoor shed away from where your child spends their time.

Block Off Dangerous Doorways:

It’s important to keep your children safe from areas like staircases or rooms which are full of dangerous objects.

Using baby gates throughout the house will ensure that your child can roam without you having to worry that they’ll have a serious fall or be hit by something hanging above them.

Use Rubber Corner Guards:

As your child is first learning to walk, they will take a lot of falls and spills.  More often than not, it’s usually into the corner of a sharp edge.  Since your baby can easily end up with a concussion or stitches from a hit to a table corner, you should create a soft barrier.

Adding corner guards to all of your sharp edges will help minimize the risk for injuries from falls.

Use Monitors:

If your baby’s room is far from the rest of the house, then you should use monitors to hear them if they cry.

For extra security, consider a video monitor so that you can not only hear them but see them as well.
