Even in 2022, it was stated that Kelly Severide’s character would not reappear. These questions further increased with the guest appearance of the character Mathew Casey, portrayed by Jesse Spencer, a talented actor and musician.
Severide last appeared in the episode of season 11 that aired on 22 February 2023. It was a personal matter of the actor Taylor Kinney that forced him to step away from the series. He took a leave of absence even after appearing on spinoffs of the show, namely “Chicago Justice,” “Chicago Med,” and “Chicago P.D.”!
In the show, the character Kelly Severide was written off as going to enroll in “the best arson investigation training program in the world”! He was married to the nature of Stella, portrayed by Miranda Rae Mayo, at the end of the last season.
It was a sudden development in the storyline because, in episode 14 of season 11, he is just showing his wife a text he gets! In the next episode, Deputy District Chief Wallace Boden Jr. learns from Van Meter that Severide has also left for Chicago for the training program.
The Deputy Director doesn’t seem happy about it and expresses his disappointment. Even so, he informs Meters that the training will benefit the firehouse when Severide returns. It is a way of keeping the opportunity to bring Kinney back!
