Self-Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam CJ Walker (2017)
The miniseries by Netflix are a little fictional; we can call it Creative Liberty. However, the movie is based on a real-life inventor and entrepreneur, Madam CJ Walker. If you watch the movie, you will be inspired by the American first black woman millionaire!
“I got my start by giving myself a start.” This is how she inspires others till today when becoming entrepreneur…
Portrayed by Octavia Spencer, the entrepreneur created hair care products, especially for black men and women! The concept of black businesswomen changed after she came onto the scene. I am sure you will be amazed by the story, especially by her achievements!

You will feel how Beyonce communicates through her music, reflecting her inspiration and her passion for her art. It brings together the beauty of African American women and the culture and the history of the Black people.
The Woman King (2022)
Another masterpiece by Viola Davis, The Woman King, centers around an all-female group of warriors! I wouldn’t say I got goosebumps; my blood was raging! These female warriors were working towards protecting the African Kingdom of Dahomey.
The performance and the movie’s action stunt and choreography were cool! I absolutely loved the actors, from Thuso Mbedu to Lashana Lynch. The cast was one to beware of!
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020)
The character Ma Rainey, the mother of blues and the jazz era in Chicago, nothing can go wrong! Director George C. Wolfe gives life to the character, while Viola Davis plays the character of Ma Rainey. It was a treat for me to watch and learn so much I did not know.
The film’s producer, Denzel Washington, creates a diamond when we start watching the movie. With her hell of a performance, Viola Davis creates magic on screen. At the same time, Chadwick Boseman portrayed the new trumpeter, who clashes with the singer!
Roxanne Roxanne (2017)
The immensely talented Roxanne Shante, with her short-lived fame and prodigal career, is the highlight of the movie. I loved the way the movie portrayed the character and how it impacted the future of female rappers.
When you watch the movie as one of the black movies on Netflix, make sure you go through Roxanne’s career! You will get a better idea of her strained relationships with her family and her growth as a performer.
Becoming (2020)
I adored this movie, not just because of the content but also because of the woman in it! Michelle Obama is a force of nature, and even though her mother might say, “Michelle and Barack Obama aren’t special, there are millions of Michelle and Barack Obama!”
I would still say that she is a one-in-the-million woman! A compelling take on the beautiful, intelligent, and smart woman, Netflix’s documentary goes deeper into her life. I loved it when she said that her beginning was from the South Side of Chicago.
“Success isn’t about how your life looks to others.” This is how Michelle inspires others along with showing how to create a better life for others!
You will notice in the documentary that Michelle never highlights the eight years of her life in the White House; instead, those years acted like a path towards bringing the change she was preparing for her whole life on the global scale towards the education and fitness of young girls.

The movie uses archival footage to give us a feeling into the incredible life and career of Nina Simone, an American singer-songwriter and pianist! But what took my breath away? When you start streaming the movie, you realize that she was not just an artist but also a civil rights activist.
The legendary chanteuse style inspires others for generations to come! Although she was one of the most popular singers, nobody could ever match her style. She once said, “To be young, gifted and black!” which shows how proud she was of her ethnicity, culture and race!
The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson (2017)
A significant action that led to the Stonewall riot and kick start the LGBTQ rights movement was throwing a brick! This documentary, which I fell in love with, is about that individual, a beautiful and brave Marsha P. Johnson, who threw that brick.
The story shows a trans woman of color who plays a significant role in launching the Stonewall riots. But what drew me to this story? The documentary delves into unanswered questions about her mysterious and untimely death that the NYPD did not even solve.
Many of you might not know, but the police neglected this investigation! The documentary does over all the untouched evidence and clues to realize the justice system gap.
Trial 4 (2020)
This movie on Netflix gave me goosebumps! Trial 4 is a gripping tale of racism where a black man is charged with homicide! It is based on a true story, which attracted me to this movie. The question was, why was an innocent man being accused of murder by the police?
The Boston police department and the judicial system were exposed for their misconduct! They tried to pin a murder done by another individual on the protagonist just because he was black. You must watch this movie if you are attracted to thrill and justice!
