We can’t imagine American Idol without Katy Perry after five seasons of extravagant costumes, infamously awkward interactions with contestants, and even the occasional wardrobe malfunction.
Luckily, we won’t have to because Perry, host Ryan Seacrest, and other judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie have all confirmed that they will return for Season 22 of ABC in 2024.
Here are the top moments from American Idol Katy Perry went overboard.

Let’s review some of the crazy incidents that have already solidified Perry’s status as one of the program’s all-time great judges while we wait for the return of the show. Some of them are probably ones Perry would prefer to forget.
Wardrobe Malfunction
Katy Perry has no problem getting her hands filthy. Perry made the decision to dance during one of the contestants’ performances. The beat of Michelle Sussett, a contestant, performing Selena’s “Techno Cumbia” simply got to her.
When it came time to get low, she just went a little too low after she had started dancing. And with that, she collapsed. She stumbled and toppled over. Fortunately, though, her fellow judges got her up and laughed at her embarrassing mishap.
Flirting
Though she hasn’t exchanged kisses like she did with Benjamin Glaze, Katy Perry has faced backlash for her amorous actions during the show. Trevor Holmes, 27, admitted during his show audition that he was a big fan of Katy Perry. But that he was also happy with his girlfriend.
Perry told him straight out that he was hot and that she even found his name appealing. She also says a few suggestive things about Jonny Brenns, who is eighteen. His performance made her swoon, and she called herself a “cougar” for being so infatuated with him.
Imitation
Based on this Katy Perry moment, the adage “Impersonation is the sincerest form of flattery” may actually be true. Singing a song that one of the judges originally performed is a risky but potentially very profitable move.
That was the situation when a competitor performed Perry’s well-known song, “I kissed a girl.” Perry was so enamored with it that she declared Lucia’s rendition superior to her own. That wasn’t the case! Katy recommended that Lucia come sing at one of her performances in the future.
The Frog Impression
In one of the episodes, Katy Perry displayed an odd talent of hers: she performed an impression of a frog. This is arguably the craziest story involving American Idol Katy Perry. She was able to widen her throat, and some of the other judges even touched it.
She even acknowledged that her talent is pretty “disgusting.” Even though we wouldn’t go that far, it was something we did not expect to see on an American Idol episode.
Prank Gone Wrong
Katy informed one of the groups during a “Hollywood Week” episode in the first season following the show’s return that one of the four girls would have to volunteer to go home.
Following a heated exchange, singer Crystal Alicea decided to withdraw from the competition and started crying. At that moment, Katy declared that everyone was genuinely experiencing this and that she was joking.
Kissing A Contestant
The Grammy Award winner kissing 19-year-old Benjamin Glaze was arguably one of the most awkward scenes on television ever! Indeed, on the lips! In the Hollywood entertainment and music industries, this moment received a lot of attention.
In his interviews, Benjamin acknowledged that he had not yet had his first kiss and that he didn’t think it would be appropriate to do so until he was in a romantic relationship. Although it may not be a common perspective, his thoughts are undoubtedly valid.
Benjamin left in the next round, and there was a great deal of controversy!
Elephant In The Room
Is it possible for something to be both utterly stunning and insane simultaneously? Based only on this 2020 rendition of Dumbo’s “Baby Mine,” we will say yes.
We would have thanked Perry if she had just offered us a beautiful performance of one of the Disney songbook’s saddest songs, but when does Perry ever settle?
Rather, this song received the full Perry treatment, complete with her pet poodle Nugget making an appearance and their matching Dumbo/Mrs. Jumbo costumes.
Cat Rebel
A strange video of the “Smile” singer behaving like a cat while donning a tight leather suit went viral over the weekend, igniting yet another uproar.
Perry uses the remarks as an occasion to demonstrate her cat skills. She gets up from her chair, stretches her leg, and crouches down to resemble a cat. She even paws playfully at Bryan’s shoulder, trying to get close to him.
But this strange behavior did not sit well with the show’s audience, who have been getting more and more irritated with Perry’s actions this season. Commentaries criticizing her coaching style and calling for her removal from the judging panel have deluged social media.
Numerous fans expressed their displeasure with Perry’s behavior. One even advocated for Perry and Bryan’s removal. One commenter called her actions “ridiculous,” while other people expressed dissatisfaction and said they no longer respected the singer.
