In recent developments, Goliath, a 135-year-old Galápagos tortoise, has become a father for the first time. Goliath is now the oldest turtle of his kind to become a father at this age. 

Goliath has been in relationships with multiple girlfriends in the past, but he has not been successful in becoming a father. His fate changed only after he met Sweet Pea. Goliath is now a proud 135-year-old father. 

Goliath and Sweet Pea were able to make the Zoo of Miami proud as the zoo celebrated the first hatch of a Galápagos Tortoise in its entire existence. 

The zoo ensured that they were in the right place for the turtle. 

Goliath arrived at Zoo Miami in 1781, and despite pairing with multiple females, he was unable to sire offspring. Goliath mated with numerous partners for decades, after which he finally met Sweet Pea. Now, the 135-year-old tortoise celebrates his first Father’s Day. 

Goliath was born on the San Cristóbal island of Galápagos and is estimated to have been born somewhere between 1885 and 1890. The turtle was not able to become a father until June 12th, 2025.  

One of the eggs laid by Sweet Pea hatched, and a baby Goliath saw the world for the first time. Hence, the 135-year-old tortoise celebrates his first Father’s Day for the first time.

The Miami Zoo has reported that Goliath’s mate, Sweet Pea, also has a long history with the Zoo. 

Sweet Pea arrived at the Crandon Park Zoo in 1960, while Goliath is 134 years old. The authorities have estimated the age of Sweet Pea to be between 85 and 100 years. 

Both tortoises have been residents of the Zoo for quite a while now, and the veteran couple has seen the world for a long period.  

Tortoises continue to entertain the Zoo’s visitors while also fulfilling their reproductive duty and contributing to the highly endangered population.  

The couple has been able to create a record while making the Miami Zoo proud.  

What Led To The Course Of Events As The 135-Year Tortoise Celebrates His First Father’s Day? 

A baby Galápagos tortoise hatched from one of the eight eggs that were laid by the mother tortoise, Sweet Pea.  

The hatchling came out of the eggs after months of incubation and was one of the first to hatch. 

What Did The Zoo Authorities Report? 

The zoo authorities reported that only eight eggs hatched after months of incubation. After the hatchling was born, it was immediately separated from its parents. 

The zoo authorities briefed that the Galápagos tortoises are solitary creatures, and they stay away from their parents right from the time they are born. 

The authorities at the zoo have claimed that the hatchling appears to be healthy and shows signs of healthy growth. 

Goliath And Sweet Pea Create A Record As The 135-Year Tortoise Celebrates His First Father’s Day? 

The zoo authorities have officially applied to the Gunnis Book of World Records to recognize Goliath as the oldest first-time father in animal history. 

The combined age of the pair is more than 200 years, which may also create another record. 

On this Father’s Day, Zoo Miami’s oldest animal will be celebrating its first birthday. 

People over the internet have been cherishing this moment; netizens and news channels congratulate the pair for their new record.
